Gas in the Motorhome

liquid gas can freeze in the regulator.......
Both Butane (Blue Cylinders) and Propane (Red Cylinders) are available for use in Motorhomes. The choice is yours but whilst Butane is the cleanest burning and the preferred option to protect your gas burning appliances, it must be remembered that as the temperature drops there is a distinct possibility that the liquid gas can freeze in the regulator and stop the flow of gas. Butane does this at a higher temperature and so if you intend to use your van when ambient temperatures are low (zero centigrade or just above) opt for Propane.

use and transport in an upright position......
Bookshop In Association with Amazon.co.ukTo use gas from a cylinder you will need a gas regulator which adjusts the pressure in the cylinder to the working pressure in the Motorhome. Butane regulators clip straight on to a self sealing blue cylinder. Propane regulators screw on to the cylinder and the cylinder itself has a wheel valve to turn the gas on and off. Gas cylinders must always be used and transported in the upright position so make sure that they are securely strapped.
N.B. Propane gas fittings have reverse threads to prevent the mixing of butane and propane fittings so remember this when disconnecting and reconnecting the regulator.

check for leaks......
When you have made any alteration to the gas installation such as changing a hose or gas bottle always check for leaks. Check using a special leak detection spray or a soapy solution brushed onto the part to be tested. Leaks can be very dangerous so take great care!!

inspect hoses and clips regularly......
Hoses and connections should be regularly inspected and changed if there is any doubt about them (annual replacement could be worthwhile). Look for signs that the rubber has perished or been damaged by other items stored in the gas locker (we all do it). don't forget to check clips for tightness and once again check for leaks.

switch gas off on board ferries....
During Ferry crossings you must make sure that the gas is switched off at the cylinder.

UK gas cylinders cannot be refilled in Europe......
UK gas cylinders cannot be refilled in Continental Europe so you will need to make alternative arrangements if you are going to use more than you can carry.
In deciding, take account of the fact that you may not use as much as usual. If you head for the south it will definitely be warmer so less heating will be required and if you do need a little why not use electricity? You are also more likely to eat more cold meals or barbecues on the charcoal 'Al Fresco'. We manage 8 weeks away without even emptying the first of our two gas bottles. To help reduce consumption think of purchasing a slow electric cooker and boil water by electricity, it really is surprising how little gas you actually need.

reserve space in gas locker......
Bookshop In Association with Amazon.co.ukIf you do decide that you will need to buy gas you have two main options. You could hire a cylinder in Calais (or anwhere else convenient), obtain refills as necessary during your stay and then when you leave for home return your cylinder to the location you originally obtained it and get a refund, just like you would in the UK. Alternatively you could obtain a cylinder in France or Spain and bring it home with you ready for next time. Either way you will need to reserve space in your gas locker for carrying it.
